Not sure where to make this thread, but I guess General is safe enough. I think it's common knowledge that Willard and Nebulous are considered to be in a rivalry as players move between the two servers. I'm going to share in this thread my own experience with Willard, its problems, what it does right and what it does wrong. I wouldn't call this a review of their server, rather a highlighter of the problems of HL2RP which have become trends.
I've been playing on Willard since it launched, which would have been about December. The initial launch went okay, and garnered a good amount of players. IC groups formed, and events were actually pretty rare outside of workshifts. It seemed people were attracted to this new codebase, as well as "turn based combat", and the new "skills" system and business system and so on.
But after some amount of time, people saw through the shiny new veneer. The population dwindled and the community management were forced to shut the server down and return to the drawing board. Around this time, Mendelevius left the community and retitled the SFM animation he made for it "They don't care about you." I don't really know why he left, but I've been in some discord calls with him where he said the admins were just handing out scripts to people, with a clear bias. This did actually happen on the initial launch, as well as a plethora of other problems (Some of this still happens to this day but I digress).
A thread was made by "Madcombat", in the complaints section of the Willard forums (which can be found here: https://willard.network/forums/threads/lets-talk-about-launch-and-the-problems-faced.1053/).
He wanted to discuss the problems the server had experienced, such as minging (which was a very prevalent problem despite the extensive staff team). Lack of citizen RP, despite promises to create a server with "citizen-centric" roleplay and "Events UNLIKE all the other servers out there". The over-reliance on GMs to get anything done, such as running businesses, which should be something doable without an admin holding your hand every step of the way.
One user put it very well:
This guy is suspiciously banned, but who knows why?
The thread was then closed by one of the admins, which will become a trend of sorts.
One notable incident that happened on the "V1" launch, as they like to call it, is the sad fate of the "Helvetican Party". In a very short amount of time, the party garnered a lot of members, especially from the CMU. It's influence was growing and it finally seemed that there would be some thematic changes to the server. But one day, the party's leader was invited to the office of the CA. The party leader was then assassinated by two admins roleplaying as hitmen. Before they shot him in the head, one of the admins said "The game was rigged from the start." before PK'ing him.
If that doesn't sum up the Willard experience, then I don't know what will.
In the months to come, the server would be down completely, but devlogs would be posted on the forum and on the discord server. Atle would also continue working on C24 V3 which is almost completed as of writing this thread. Nothing comes to my mind during this time, so I'll move onto the Beta which launched recently
The beta is worse than the initial launch in ALMOST every way. I personally made a thread about the beta's problems which can be found here: https://willard.network/forums/threads/the-beta-complaint-mega-thread.1760/
The tl;dr is:
"Everything feels disconnected and isolated from each other. The CCA doesn't do much, the CPs are bog standard, maybe even sub-par, and patrolling is the most you'll see them do. Citizens work without incentive. Loyalism is not in. Housing is not in. Food and water is useless. Work rp for two weeks was a bad idea, but it had potential."
The thread received 2k views, and 98 replies. It was probably the biggest complaint thread in the community's history. The staff quickly closed the thread only after two days, which is exactly what happened with the V1 launch I mentioned earlier. The staff brush off criticism by using their current playercount as a sign they're doing well, and by pointing out that it's a beta (which somehow means no one can criticize it).
I really do want Willard to succeed as a community, but they've already messed up twice. The good server pop they have right now is temporary, as it was on the initial launch. Once the "V2" launch finally happens, they'll be using C24 v3 which will, unfortunately, attract people to the server for a time, and ensnaring them in another cycle of lies and disappointment.
So if you criticize Willard on their forums, your thread will get locked, and if you bring it to discord you will get muted for a week.
The admins are on damage control duty more often then they run events on the server.
I want this thread to be civil, concise, and to the point. I do not want attacks on any individual's character either. This is a thread dedicated to modern HL2RP and its many, many shortcomings.
Enjoy the ride.
